October in the Mid-Atlantic Region
- Autumn colors peak in the third week of October.
- Groundhogs are feeding heavily for hibernation. Read what renowned Master Naturalist Alonso Abugattas has to say about groundhogs on his blog, Capital Naturalist.
- White-tailed Deer bucks go into rut. Shortening day length actually invokes hormonal shifts that induce estrus in does and rut in bucks. Rising testosterone levels cause bucks to get bigger, tougher, and meaner! You can learn more from naturalist Cliff Fairweather on Loudoun Wildlife Conservancy's website.
- This is the month to install and repair nest boxes for use next year. Wild Birds Unlimited of Ashburn has several nest boxes available on mywbu.com/ashburn. Visit the store to see the entire selection and to discuss nesting in your yard.
- Most Wood Ducks migrate south this month, while a few stay to over winter. Waterfowl migration continues to build.
- Ruby-throated Hummingbirds depart this month, but keep your feeders clean and full for late departures! Although uncommon, Rufous Hummingbirds may arrive in Maryland and Virginia.
- Juncos and White-Throated Sparrows become common at, and beneath, feeders. Add white millet to your seed offerings as a treat for these snow birds.
- Orionids meteor shower is late-October.
